I’ve been missing on my own blog lately. I’ve spent some time feeling stuck, wanting to share what this simple blueberry smoothie means to me, but not oversharing on the details. I have written and rewritten – and rewritten again – that’s how it’s been writing this post. You see, a few weeks ago I saw the signs go up for the St. Louis Art Fair in Clayton. The Art Fair has become an annual event we have enjoyed as a family to close out the summer. We missed it this year, but seeing the signs up for the Art Fair took me back to last September’s event. It was at the Art Fair that we first noticed our son was getting sick.
When your child gets sick, nothing is normal, the daily routines, the daily interactions, the daily activities. Accepting that the illness will take its course, usually beyond your control, is a challenge when all you want is to have your child’s world well again. In our case the illness made a 3 week visit to our son. He was unable to do any of the things that he normally did – yet he was focused, sweet and strong. What unstrung me was that my son didn’t feel like eating anything. RB and I were able to convince him to sip on the fruit smoothies he has always loved! It was one of the few normal things that we could hold on to during a trying time for our family. Fortunately, he had a full recovery. Our hope for all kids who fall ill is for their return to well.
This is the Blueberry Smoothie I made for my son when he didn’t feel like eating anything else. Here is our simple recipe – add love and serve! Hugs, Dana
|A Simple Blueberry Smoothie|
- 1 cup frozen blueberries
- 1 cup yogurt (I use organic whole milk yogurt, but use the yogurt you prefer)
- 1/2 cup almond milk (substitute a different liquid here if you want)
- 1/2 – 1 whole frozen banana
- 1 tablespoon honey
- Add the almond milk into your blender container first.
- Next add yogurt and honey.
- Lastly add the frozen fruit.
- Cover with the lid and blend on high until the mixture is smooth.
- Pour into a glass (or into a monster cup if need be).
- Add a fun straw and drink.
For a non-dairy smoothie I use:
2 cups frozen fruit (we like a blueberry, strawberry combination)
1 1/2 cup almond milk (or combination almond milk / coconut milk)
1 banana (fresh or frozen)
1 tablespoon organic sugar
