COUNTERTIME is finally here!!! Countertime is Beautycounter’s new anti-aging skin care line and will be released for sale this month. It’s the biggest launch in the history of the company. I’ve had the opportunity to try it before the launch, and the results on my skin are amazing!! At Beautycounter, we believe that age is an attitude, and good skin is a science. We are committed to providing high-performing and cleaner skin care without the use of 1500 questionable ingredients.
The regimen is formulated with our plant-derived Retinatural Complex, a high-performing and safe alternative to Retinol. Countertime is designed to reverse signs of aging skin and deliver transformative results – visibly firming, brightening, and plumping the skin with Retinatural Complex. Bakuchiol is the ingredient that repairs, and Swiss Alpine rose is the ingredient that protects–natural ingredients that deliver retinol-like results without the irritation. Bakuchiol is a plant extract, traditionally used in eastern medicine for skin care because of its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It is found in the seeds and leaves of the babchi plant. Babchi grows in India and is part of Ayruvedic medicine. Countertime, Beautycounter’s plant-based Bakuchiol regimen, has a more favorable user profile than retinol and needs no prescription. In recent scientific studies comparing Bakuchiol with retinol, results from Bakuchiol are as effective as retinol in reducing fine lines and wrinkles, smoothing the texture of the skin without the side effects and discomfort of retinol – stinging, flaking, and photo sensitivity.
The bottom line on the scientific evidence: Bakuchiol is as effective as retinol with less side effects.

“Studies have shown that bakuchiol helps prevent fine lines and wrinkles, helps with pigmentation, elasticity and firmness,” New York-based dermatologist Debra Jaliman, an American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) Spokesperson, told Newsweek. “It stimulates collagen and elastin synthesis. Prolonged use has shown to decrease roughness and dryness.” Dr. Jaliman recommends bakuchiol to clients with all skin types because of its versatility.
Less skin irritation than retinol
A double-blind study reported in the British Journal of Dermatology assigned one trial group bakuchiol and another group retinol. After 12 weeks of application, both the bakuchiol and the retinol group’s skin showed significant decreases in wrinkles and hyperpigmentation, but the retinol users reported more facial skin scaling and stinging. Skin irritation is one of the major potential drawbacks of retinol, especially in patients who have dermatological conditions like rosacea and eczema. Bakuchiol offers a gentler, less irritating alternative for people with sensitive skin.
Safer and plant-based
Retinol can also contain animal byproducts, from sources like liver, fish and egg yolks, while plant-based bakuchiol is totally vegan. Because of its safety profile, Bakuchiol is also safe to use in pregnancy and while nursing.
Our Retinatural Complex works with these key ingredients (Bakuchiol and Swiss Alpine rose) to promote a healthy barrier function. As we age, we begin to lose our skin’s moisture barrier which helps protect our skin from the environment. The targeted ingredients in our Retinatural Complex improve barrier function to protect the skin and maintain the skin’s natural hydration levels, while also visibly firming and plumping the skin to provide a radiant glow.
